The town of Shiwa lies at the southern entrance to the wider Morioka-Hachimantai area. A land of ricefields and farmland, this area is also known for its many varieties of fruit, such as apples and grapes. The locally-produced glutinous rice Himenomochi boasts the highest production volume in Japan, and, at harvest time, glutinous rice cakes reminiscent of the old days can be seen lining store shelves.
Also known as the birthplace of Nanbu Toji (Iwate master brewers), the local sake made by the four local sake breweries is the pride of the town. The production of tasty local wine is also gaining ground as the number of local vineyards increases.
Shiwa also boasts a wide range of culinary delights. This area of Iwate was developed relatively early and is associated with figures such as Sakanoueno Tamuramaro. Historical remains speak of episodes in history from the days of the Oshu Fujiwara clan and Minamoto no Yoritomo. Come and discover the history latent in the tranquil landscape of Shiwa.
