Miss Sansa and Miss Taiko lead the parade with their graceful dance.
The Guinness World Record holder for the largest Taiko parade.
This origin of this festival lies in the legend of Mitsuishi, which gave Iwate its name. There was a demon that was causing problems for villagers. The God Mitsuishi captured the demon and forced it to swear that it would never again commit evil acts. This vow was sealed by the demon pressing its hand into a large rock. The villagers rejoiced at this by dancing and singing “Sansa sansa,” giving birth to this festival.
The festival is held from August 1st to 4th. The dancers gather on Chuo-dori. The echo of the taiko drums are the signal for the parade to begin. More than 10,000 dancers participate, and this festival has been recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records for its number of dancers. The dance continues late into the night with the vibrant sound of taiko drums and their musical accompaniment. At the end of the parade, circle dances are held that tourists can also participate in.
