Iwatemachi Town

Iwatemachi is a town surrounded by the Kitakami mountains to the east and the 900m Ou mountain range to the west. The average temperature here is 9.3°C, with extreme differences between hot and cold. Here, the people have adapted to the climate and the land to grow vegetable crops. Iwatemachi is also known as the 'river town', as it is the source of the Kitakami river, the longest river in the prefecture and the second longest in the Tohoku region. A hot spot is the Ishigamino Oka Museum with its outdoor sculpture display, which has been designated a sacred place for young lovers. Visitors can also enjoy the many variations of Iwate Yakiudon (stir-fried noodles) created from local ingredients by local chefs.
